What’s the big idea?

The idea for Sustainability Central came out of various conversations with local non-profits, all who work in the realm of sustainability, and all who need something more — more space, more funding, more volunteers, and more people who know about what they do — so that their work can have a bigger impact, both locally and globally.

Most of these organizations help in realms beyond sustainability, by creating items from “waste” construction materials for a furniture bank, using “rescued” food to create delicious meals for hungry people, or by collecting items people commonly have but don’t always need that social service agencies can use to help their clients. These actions help decrease the need for new items, which helps minimize the amount of greenhouse gases that would have been produced in the creation of those items, which helps limit the worst effects of climate change, which hit low-income communities, often communities of color, the hardest.

To find out more details for what we’re planning for Sustainability Central — including where we hope to have the campus, types of spaces we hope to have there, a list of things we hope to collect there, and a rough timeline of the project — please see the PowerPoint presentation below from our Potential Stakeholders’ Meetings this past November.
